As Distributed Energy Resource (DER) saturation increases nationwide, states are faced with a rapid need for grid modernization and the construction of complex infrastructure upgrades. Limited hosting capacity has created critical barriers to DER integration, such as high interconnection costs and extended timelines. Flexible interconnection, or the use of software and hardware to monitor and actively manage DERs, can enable more DERs to interconnect to existing infrastructure and mitigate the need for costly upgrades. While flexible interconnection is a promising opportunity, it is also a novel process that introduces new risks and challenges. This session will provide a high-level explanation of what flexible interconnection can offer to a modern grid. Speakers will discuss enabling policies, technical standards, and the technologies that can best leverage this framework.
